Elenger, the largest private energy company in the Baltic region and Finland, has finalized its first biomethane gas deal in Latvia. The company will supply biomethane to Ltd. Schneider Electric Latvia, which leases premises in a building owned by Ltd. BLRT Invest Latvia. To enable the transaction, Elenger will source biomethane from the Czech Republic and deliver it to Latvia using the unified infrastructure network of gas transmission and storage system operator AS Conexus Baltic Grid.
“This step is crucial for advancing the green transition in the Baltic Sea region. We have examined the regulations of various countries and assessed the readiness of system operators, ensuring that biomethane can be successfully and seamlessly procured across multiple national borders and gas networks,” said Margus Kaasik, Chairman of the Board of Elenger Grupp.
Biomethane is a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source with a composition similar to natural gas, making it suitable for heating and transportation fuel. It helps industries, transportation, and heating sectors achieve climate goals. Biomethane is produced by fermenting organic waste and agricultural residues and is fully compatible with existing natural gas infrastructure.
Elenger operates in six markets—Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany—serving over 450,000 customers. The company is involved in energy sales and trading, energy infrastructure, and energy production.
Elenger provides customers with Western natural gas and renewable biomethane while managing gas distribution networks in Estonia, Latvia, and Poland, with a total length of 9,000 km. The company also sells electricity, including green electricity produced in its own solar energy parks. Actively engaged in international energy trade, the company employs over 1,000 people. Last year, Elenger’s revenue reached one billion euros. Elenger is wholly owned by the investment company Infortar, which is listed on the Nasdaq Tallinn Stock Exchange Baltic Main List.
