First LNG bunker vessel to arrive on North-East Baltic Sea

The parent company of Elenger, Eesti Gaas, has placed an order for an LNG bunker vessel with bunker tank capacity of 6,000 m3. The new vessel will provide mobile and efficient LNG bunkering for the growing number of LNG-fuelled vessels in the North-East region of the Baltic Sea, as well as onshore clients.

The vessel will be delivered in September 2020.

The vessel will predominantly operate in the Gulf of Finland area. The technical management for the vessel will be provided by the region’s leading shipping company Tallink Grupp.

The new vessel will be capable of carrying out bunker activities both in ports and outside ports, at designated anchorage points. In combination with the innovative hull design and running on LNG, the vessel’s emissions will be significantly lower than those of traditional vessels.

The bunker vessel will feature dual-fuel engines, thrusters that facilitate enhanced close-quarters manoeuvring and ice class 1A, according to the Finnish-Swedish ice-class regulations. This will allow her to operate all year round, including in the region’s challenging ice conditions.

The LNG bunker vessel is an important part of the new mobile LNG infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea.

 

Unique LNG truck-to-ship bunkering expertise

The parent company of Elenger, Eesti Gaas, is the first and, as of today, the only one in the Baltic region that has developed reliable and flexible LNG delivery and truck-to-ship (TTS) bunkering capabilities. In one month, we deliver around 1300 tons of LNG and conduct an average of 65 bunkering operations. We are ready to provide our service to all ports in the Baltic region. For the initial sales offer, we need the input information on the fuel consumption of the vessel, the bunkering schedule and the planned technical solution. It is also necessary to develop LNG bunkering rules in cooperation with the harbour, to draw up a safety analysis and to coordinate the relevant documents. All necessary preparatory work, documentation and approvals will be taken on by us.

We deliver LNG for Tallink “Megastar” – the state-of-the-art shuttle ferry launched on Tallinn-Helsinki route in January 2017. The bunkering of the vessel takes place in the Old City Harbour (Vanasadam) of Tallinn, using the truck-to-ship method. The semi-trailers produced by the leading German manufacturer Gofa, are equipped with powerful Cryostar 1000 l/min pumps that allow the bunkering to be carried out in 45 minutes. In one month, we conduct an average of 65 bunkering operations, two to four trucks at a time, depending on the vessel’s need. Customer’s satisfaction with the reliability of our LNG supply and TTS-bunkering service is proven by the fact that after the first year of cooperation we renewed our contract for another five years.

LNG – the best marine fuel

Since 2015, the sulfur content in marine fuel used on the Baltic Sea must not exceed 0.10 %. To meet the requirement, ship operators have three options: start using low sulfur fuel, install scrubbers or switch to LNG (liquefied natural gas).

LNG provides an efficient combination of ecological and economic benefits, thus allowing both to save on fuel costs, as well as to meet environment protection requirements. LNG is the cleanest marine fuel, the use of which is growing rapidly throughout the world. Using LNG also reduces noise and vibration on board.

The European Union has also adopted a plan of action for the development of a LNG bunkering network by 2025.

The number of LNG ships is growing

  • The size of the fleet using LNG is growing worldwide. Estimations of growth pace vary, but there is a broad consensus on the overall upward trend.
  • LNG suits all types of vessels, both, ferries and passenger ships, as well as tankers, container ships and other cargo ships.

LNG meets environmental requirements

LNG helps to reduce both global carbon dioxide emissions, as well as local air pollution. The transition to LNG completely eliminates sulphur oxides’ and fine particles’ and substantially reduces nitrogen oxides’ emissions. CO2 emissions will also be significantly reduced. The use of LNG as marine fuel ensures compliance with the requirements for emissions set by the International Maritime Organization and the European Union.
